Description

The Tern Lake is our warmest piece. The shell is a tightly woven recycled nylon with a durable water-repellent finish and fully taped seams; the fill is 700-fill down that has been washed, sorted and traced back to the farm. Baffles are stitched-through at the arms for mobility and box-walled through the body so the down keeps its loft where you need it.

It runs to just above the knee, which is the difference between waiting for a bus and enduring it. The hood takes a hat without crushing it, and the two-way zip means you can open the hem to sit down or drive without unzipping to your chest. Inside the left chest pocket there is a small loop for keys and a mesh drop pocket deep enough for a pair of mitts. Every zip pull is a plain cord you can replace with a bootlace if it ever gives out.

Specification

  • Shell: recycled 40D ripstop nylon, DWR finish, taped seams
  • Fill: 700-fill traceable down, box-wall through the body
  • Hood: two-point adjustment, removable ruff
  • Hardware: two-way centre-front zip, replaceable pulls
  • Made in Vietnam

Fit

Cut generously through the body to clear a mid-layer. Take your normal size for a fleece or sweater underneath; size up only if you plan to wear it over a suit jacket.

Care

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with a down-specific detergent, then tumble dry low with two clean tennis balls until the fill is fully open. Do not dry clean, and re-proof the shell with a wash-in DWR once a season.

I walk my dog at six in the morning through the whole winter and this is the first coat that has made that pleasant instead of survivable. The two-way zip is the detail I did not know I needed until I sat down in the car. Down has stayed lofted after two washes.

Genuinely warm and the hood fits over a toque. Only note is that the inner mesh pocket is a little shallow for a large phone. I have worn it for two months and the DWR is still beading.

  3. Priya Raman (verified owner)

Bought the moss and it is a proper muted green, not olive drab. Long enough to cover the back of my legs on a bike. The zip pulls are just cord, which sounds cheap but means I can fix it myself.
