Description
The Kenai is cut from 10oz British waxed cotton with a short, stiffened peak and six panels seamed over a cotton flannel lining. The wax is a dry-finish blend, so it sheds a light rain and doesn’t transfer onto a collar the way older paraffin finishes did. The peak is bonded rather than glued, which is why it holds its shape after it gets wet.
It sits close enough to stay on in wind off the water, and the flannel lining means you can wear it for an hour without your scalp sweating. There’s a grosgrain sweatband stitched in with a small gap at the back so the cap can be steamed and stretched half a size by a hatter if it runs tight. Worth knowing: the wax darkens where it creases, and after a season those creases become the cap’s own map.

Care
Wipe with a damp cloth only. Never machine wash or dry clean, and re-wax the crown and peak once a year with a solid cotton wax, warmed and worked in by hand.

Good weight and it stays on in wind, which was the whole point for me. The wax smell was strong for about a week and then faded. I’d have liked a slightly deeper crown but that’s personal.
