Description
The body is 18oz waxed cotton canvas, a heavy weight that stands up on its own when the bag is loaded. Every load-bearing seam is bar-tacked and the base is a second layer of the same canvas, doubled and turned so there is no exposed raw edge to wick water. Shoulder straps are bridle leather at the anchor points and padded webbing over the shoulder, which is the honest compromise between how a leather strap looks and how a padded one carries.
Inside there’s a padded sleeve that takes a 15in laptop and a zipped pocket for the small things that otherwise migrate to the bottom. The flap closes on two leather billets with solid brass buckles, and there’s a hidden magnetic catch under the flap so you can get in one-handed on a bus without undoing the straps. Twenty-six litres is enough for a two-night trip if you pack honestly.

Care
Brush off dried mud rather than scrubbing wet dirt in. Spot clean with cold water and re-wax the base and shoulders every twelve to eighteen months; never machine wash, which strips the wax and the water resistance with it.

Loaded it with a laptop, camera and two days of clothes for a work trip and the straps didn’t dig in once. The doubled base means it stands up by the door instead of flopping over. Heavy empty, but that’s the trade for canvas this weight.

Beautifully made and the brass buckles are the real thing, not plated. My only note is that the top flap needs a firm hand in the first weeks before the leather billets soften enough to slide easily. It has eased off since.

Rain sat on the canvas in beads for a full walk home. Interior pockets are useful without being fussy. I’d have paid a little more for a water bottle pocket on the outside, which it doesn’t have.
